Unplugged at Sea: How Cruising Teaches Us to Slow Down

Ding. Buzz. Scroll. Repeat.

At home, it feels like our phones never stop chiming...work emails, school reminders, news alerts, social media pings. The noise follows us from the moment we wake up to the moment our heads hit the pillow. But the moment I step onto a ship and sail past the shoreline, something shifts. The Wi-Fi slows down, the horizon widens, and suddenly, there’s space to breathe.

The Magic of Sea Days

Sea days are my favorite part of cruising. There’s nowhere to rush, no traffic to beat, no errands to check off. Instead, the rhythm is set by the ocean itself. You wake up to sunrise over the water, sip coffee while the ship gently rocks, and let the day unfold — maybe a book by the pool, maybe a cooking class, maybe just a nap with the balcony door cracked open so you can hear the waves.

On land, I sometimes feel guilty for “doing nothing.” At sea, it becomes the whole point. Those quiet stretches between ports remind me that rest isn’t wasted time (it’s a necessary part of the journey).

Lessons From the Farm

Oddly enough, cruising has taught me the same lesson my farm life whispers every day. Out here, the goats don’t care if I answer an email right away. Bread rises at its own pace. Morning chores don’t allow for multitasking. There’s a slow, grounding rhythm to feeding animals or kneading dough; a rhythm that mirrors the calm of being at sea.

Both places remind me that peace is found in the pauses. That it’s okay to step back from the noise and let life happen at a gentler pace.

Imagine Yourself There

Picture it: your phone on airplane mode, your biggest decision being “pool chair or balcony lounger?” You finally finish that book you’ve been meaning to read. You reconnect with yourself, your travel companions, and the beauty of simply being.

That’s the gift of cruising; adventure on the edges, rest at the core. It’s a balance most of us are craving more than ever.

Ready to Unplug?

If you’re ready for a vacation that lets you see the world and breathe a little deeper, a cruise might be the perfect fit. I’d love to help you find an itinerary that blends excitement with calm, because sometimes the best souvenir is the stillness you bring home with you.

Welcome Aboard: Captain Breadbeard Joins the Crew ⚓🥖

Every great voyage begins with a story, and ours just got a brand-new chapter. The farm kitchen may not look like the high seas, but a certain new recruit has already claimed the title of Captain. Meet Captain Breadbeard — our sourdough starter with more personality than yeast cells!

From Jar to Journey

Tucked inside a cozy Weck jar by a sunny Tennessee window, Captain Breadbeard is no ordinary starter. While most starters are content bubbling away quietly, this one dreams of logbooks, adventures, and commanding the “crew” both in the kitchen and on deck.

The farm goats may be the passengers, the rolling hills our horizon, and the smell of fresh bread our sea breeze — but make no mistake, Breadbeard has set sail on a mission: to rise, grow, and lead us into new adventures.

Why a Captain?

Because every ship (and every sourdough journey) needs leadership. Just like choosing the right cruise ship or itinerary, crafting a sourdough starter is all about patience, planning, and letting things develop at their own pace. Captain Breadbeard isn’t rushing the journey — he’s resting, fermenting, and preparing for many voyages to come.

And in true captain’s fashion, he’s taking over the logbook from here. Expect salty sea quotes, cozy farm tales, and a sprinkle of whimsy in every update.

What’s Next for the Crew?

Over the coming days, you’ll get sneak peeks of Captain Breadbeard’s progress — from sleepy beginnings to full, bubbly glory. Along the way, he’ll be sharing insights, polls, and little slices of humor (because every crew needs a laugh or two).

Whether you’re here for the bread, the travel, or simply the story, you’re officially part of the crew. And trust me… this is only the beginning.

Ready to follow Captain Breadbeard’s voyage? Stay tuned right here on the blog — or hop over to Instagram stories where the logbook comes to life daily.

Cruise Embarkation Day Hacks You’ll Be Glad You Knew 🚢✨

Checklist

Embarkation day - that magical moment when your dream vacation officially begins! While the excitement is high, it can also be a little hectic if you’re not prepared. Think of it as the first chapter of your cruise story - and these hacks will help you start it stress-free.

1. Check In Online Early 📲

Don’t wait until the last minute! Cruise lines open online check-in weeks before sailing. Completing it early lets you snag the best boarding time, upload documents, and breeze through the terminal while others are stuck in line.

2. Pack a Carry-On Bag 🎒

Your checked luggage might not reach your cabin until late afternoon. Keep essentials handy in a small bag:

  • Travel documents & passport

  • Medications

  • Phone charger

  • Swimsuit (for that first dip in the pool!)

  • A change of clothes for dinner

3. Snap Photos Before You Board 📸

The terminal and ship exterior are full of photo-worthy moments. Capture your “before” shots now - before sunscreen, pool hair, and cruise cocktails take over.

4. Head Straight to Specialty Areas 🍹

Once you board, popular spots like the pool deck, specialty restaurants, and kids’ clubs fill up fast. Explore right away, grab a drink, and lock in those reservations before the crowds arrive.

5. Don’t Overpack Your First Day 🍴

Buffets will be busy, so consider heading to a smaller restaurant or café on embarkation day. Many cruisers don’t realize these are open, and it’s a calmer, tastier start to your trip.

6. Decorate Your Cabin Door Early 🚪

If you brought magnets or decorations, put them up right away! It makes your door easy to spot and kicks off the fun cruise spirit.

7. Attend the Muster Drill ✅

Yes, it’s mandatory - but treat it as part of the experience. Pay attention, snap a quick photo with your muster station sign, and then you’re free to enjoy sail-away.

8. Sail-Away Strategy 🌊

Pro tip: Don’t stay only on the main pool deck for sail-away. Head to a less crowded aft or upper deck for the best views, fewer crowds, and that perfect first toast at sea.

Final Thoughts ✨

Embarkation day doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With these hacks, you’ll glide from dock to deck with confidence - and spend less time stressing, more time soaking in the sea breeze.
